Network of Innovating Regions in Europe (IRE)

The IRE network seeks to strengthen the global competitiveness of European regions by promoting innovation policies, and providing a unique platform for regions to cooperate and learn from each other.

The IRE network is Europe’s largest platform for regions that are developing and implementing regional innovation strategies and schemes. The IRE Secretariat is a central service, which organises on a daily basis network activities and provides technical support to IRE network members. The main aim is to support the efforts of IRE members to design and implement regional innovation strategies and schemes. The services provided include identification and dissemination of good practices on regional innovation schemes, methodological support for the development of regional innovation strategies, organisation of events, management of working groups and provision of publications.

The project has a timeframe of four years and a budget of approx. 4.5 Million Euros, and will be completed at the end of 2008. The project was financed by the European Commission’s DG Enterprise and Industry.
