Innovation Impact Study (IIS)

Innovation is a policy priority in the EU as it is regarded as a key driver of competitiveness and economic progress.

At the moment, the European Union, despite a strong record of scientific excellence, lags behind in innovation performance, especially in terms of the commercial benefits that firms manage to exploit from their research efforts. This situation is far from being in line with the Lisbon objective of making the Union.

IIS analysed the relationship between RTD projects, innovation and economic performance at the firm level as well as at industry sector level in all EU 27 Member States.

The overall objective of the Innovation Impact study is to understand the relationship between research, technological advancement, innovation and economic performance in the context of collaborative RTD projects funded by the European Framework Programmes. The study will result in the formulation of recommendations for the future Framework Programmes (FP7 and future FP8) and the Programme on Competitiveness and Innovation (CIP) in order to increase the innovative results and their subsequent commercial exploitation.

IIS has a timeframe of two years and a budget of over 2 Million Euros, and has been completed in February 2008. The project was financed by the European Commission’s DG Enterprise and Industry.
